Eula Mary Ewing
August 3, 1928 - May 20, 2023
On the third day of summer in August 1928, Andrew and Marilla (Blanton) Hill welcomed their beautiful
daughter, Eula Mae (Mary) Hill in Altus, Oklahoma. She joined her 9 older loving and adoring siblings
into a hardworking, Christian family who embodied unconditional love, a strong faith in God and unity.
The Hill family had a tradition with the birth of each child, the older siblings were responsible for each
new baby - this tradition would continue until the number of children eventually grew to 17. Born
during the Great Depression in America, the family moved from Altus to Sayre and eventually to Geary,
as work was limited and her father heard of good schools and churches in Geary in addition to work on
WPA programs and farm jobs in which he could support his family.
The family raised a garden, worked farms, and her mother worked as a domestic. Through it all her
parents had an inner strength which they passed on to all their children. The family lived briefly in a
dugout west of Geary before moving to town. The time in the dugout was brief, however they describe
happy times singing and worshiping God on top of the hill the dugout was built upon. Her parents
modeled faith and hard work as foundations in their lives - and this was shown by their ability to buy
land in town, build a home with the help of their sons and move to a home of their own. Andrew and
Marilla had gifted singers, pastors and musicians, each knew all the songs and would travel with their
father as the Hill Family Singers.
She accepted Christ at an early age and attended the Baptist and Holiness churches in Geary. Before
integration, Eula attended school in Geary at the Douglas school where she thoroughly enjoyed theater
and study with her classmates who were lifelong friends. Her sense of community then and now
continued throughout her life and her strong drive for education persisted and she passed that on to her
children and grandchildren. Her parents decided to move to Pueblo, Colorado for better jobs her last
year of high school and she was engaged and later married Sullivan P. Nicholson, Sr., to whom she wed
in 1947 and was blessed with 4 children, Larry, Gregory, Reata, Sullivan and a bonus daughter Barbara
Ann Nicholson Daniels. She traveled and lived in Paris, France, and San Antonio, Texas during her
husband’s military career. They settled back to Oklahoma City where she completed correspondence
courses in LaSalle University and eventually in 1962 completed certification for Scrub Technician at St.
Anthony Hospital where she was encouraged by several doctors to pursue nursing.
During this time in Oklahoma City she was a faithful member of Sunnylane Baptist Church. After her
divorce, she joined her brother Overseer Edgar Hill at the Church of the Living God, #1, Spencer. She
married her forever love Sherman Ewing, Sr., gained two bonus sons, Sherman,Jr. and DeWayne and
added their last and final baby boy, Barry Shawn, and moved to Geary, Okla. This is where her true
Mission began as a mother, nurse, confidant and keeper of the family. The job market wasn’t as viable,
but she took what was available and worked for over 30 years at the Geary Nursing Home. Where some
would see it as a downgrade from scrub tech, for the good of her family she worked first as Nurse
Assistant to CNA. She eventually attended Canadian Valley vocational school at age 39 to continue her
drive to become a nurse. Mother met no stranger and cared for the sick in health and spirit,
encouraging many young women to pursue nursing along the way. She also cared for many citizens'
families in the Geary Nursing Home. She was a fixture in the community known for her calm and loving
nature even in the midst of many storms in life. Her faith in God kept her as the Joy of the Lord was her
strength. After retiring from the Geary Nursing Home, she continued to work in home health until she
was 82 years old and was forced to quit. She worked with broken bones, pain, back surgery, knee
surgery, nothing stopped her from her passion of care . Nothing kept her down.
After being forced to retire, she continued to work in the church, kept up with her ladies’ club, and was
a listening ear to those who called. Even when in the hospital, she spread love, prayed and shared
words of encouragement to staff. She loved learning and her memory was as bright as a star until she
left this earth. She loved her family, Sudoku, Sonic root beer, club crackers, as well as travel, flowers,
bling, getting mani-pedis with her daughter, and gained the name ‘Grand Diva’. She was awarded for
her service to the community by the Mayor of Geary in 2016. As her health challenges continued, she
smiled and kept her daily talks with God. Her desire was to meet Jesus from her home, as the Holy Spirit
would do on May 20, 2023. God gathered her home to Paradise to sing in his heavenly choir.
