Joe Slaten was born December 5,1936 in Enid, Ok to Willie and Dorothy Slaten. Joe passed away on December 4, 2024. Joe grew up in Enid and graduated from Booker T High School in 1955. Joe joined the United States Marine Corp in 1956 and was stationed in San Diego, California. Joe worked for Champlin Oil until it closed and then cooked at the Holiday Inn for 20 years. Joe later went to work for Garfield County as a maintenance man until he was forced into retirement because of his Parkinson's diagnosis.
Joe is survived by his wife of 29 years, Janet Slaten of Edmond, Ok; and one son Maurice Hartfield of Enid, Ok; and his 3 daughters Natasha Blakes of Chickasha, Ok; Jamie Pitts of Stillwater, Ok; and Jolisa Slaten of Edmond, Ok. Grandchildren Dawnshaye Davis of Chickasha, Ok; Olijah Davis and Kyro Davis of Chickasha, Ok; Eathan Pitts and Maddie Pitts of Stillwater, Ok; and Kenneth Phillips and Maurice Lawson of Enid, Ok.
Joe loved life, he never met a stranger. Joe would help you if you needed it. Joe hired and trained many young people at the Holiday Inn where he was the head cook. Joe was never down and out. Joe was always positive and upbeat. Joe was always clowning and telling jokes with whomever would listen. Joe will be dearly missed by friends, family and his faithful service dog Paco Slaten.
Special mention to Alma Faye Laster, Marie Butler, and the grandchildren of Jean Jackson; Gwen Scantlen, Freda Collins, Sonya Collins and Eddie Collins. Joe was known as PawPaw to all of them.
Joe was preceded in death by his Mother and Father Dorothy and Willie Slaten, one sister Donna Slaten and one brother Earl Slaten.
